Abstract:
Pakistan has experienced a rapid motorization in last one decade. In this duration the vehicle population raised up to 11 million and One of the major reasons is fast Urbanization because people are migrating from villages to big cities. The old transportation network is unable to meet this increased demand.
In this project our focus is the congestion analysis of IJP road Islamabad, this road serves as a link road between Islamabad expressway and Peshawar road, more over it carries the major flow of traffic from Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Hence we have analyzed the possible sources of delays and all factors responsible for congestion. one of the major reason for delays is the Heterogeneous traffic Mix.
From analysis we have found that the traffic flow is exceeding the capacity of existing two lanes, hence to improve the LOS, we need to add more lanes. From Analysis we found that the heavy traffic is contributing 35-40% of PCU's on this road, hence the additional lanes must be rigid to avoid damage to pavement. Moreover huge delays are observed at Double Road Chowk (Intersection of IJP Road and 9th Avenue). To minimize these delays we have proposed a Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) at this location.
From these interventions we have obtained reduced delays and improved LOS for this road.
