Transportation has become a vital part of any society. It has always played an important role in influencing the formation of urban societies. Daily a large number of people travel from one place to another for various purposes such as to go to work, school, college, recreational purposes, shopping etc. Road transportation remains the most imp mode of transport. In developed and developing countries, a very large portion of people travel daily for work, education, recreation, shopping and other amenities. Transport consumes a lot of resources like land and materials. Traffic during operations consume time and fuel. For the smooth flow of traffic, it is required to reduce the traffic congestion.
In Pakistan, no significant effort has ever been made to analyze the traffic impacts resulting from major development projects. Same is the case with the development of Housing Colonies astride N-5 at the outskirts of Rawalpindi. At present, there are nine colonies developed in 9 kilometers long stretch of N-5 i.e. from Sawan Bridge to Rawat T-Chowk. The share of traffic generated from these colonies on N-5 is increasing rapidly, therefore to ensure smooth traffic flow, Traffic Analysis Studies have to be conducted and Traffic Congestion Solutions have to be proposed to improve the LOS. In our project, we assessed the share of traffic generated from the Housing Colonies developed on N-5, from Sawan Bridge to Rawat T-Chowk, at present and foreseeing once the colonies are fully developed. We have also suggested the remedial measures to improve the LOS of this N-5 Section by:
• Suggesting alternate routes to through traffic.
• Infrastructure interventions.
• Operational Interventions |
