Abstract:
Improvement in internal combustion engine performance, fuel efficiency and engine emission are matter of concerns in world of automobiles. The experimental approximations of these factors are more expensive and time consuming. Therefore, a mathematical based simulation of internal combustion engine proves to be an effective tool in new development, evaluation and estimating the desired engine performance and other engine parameters effect on efficiencies.
In this thesis, a detailed mathematical model of a 4-stroke internal combustion engine is analyzed, studied and compiled consisting in-cylinder cycle pressure, in-cylinder cycle temperature, engine torque, intake and exhaust mass flow rate through respective valves, Weibe model of heat release, Hohenberg model of heat losses through the engine cylinder walls, turbocharger‟s turbine and compressor work etc. As the comprehensive engine model is assembled, the model is simulated in MATLAB. The engine parameter values i.e. ambient temperature and pressure, air fuel ratio, compression ratio, lower heating value, engine crank degree duration of burning and crank degree for ignition start etc. are optimized using detail research review. Real time laboratory model data of intake valve and exhaust valve effective area with respect to crank degree is used in simulation of mathematical model. The simulation in MALTAB results nature is verified with theoretical and previous research results.
After achieving the convincing results from MATLAB simulation, a graphical user interface (GUI) was designed and generated in MATLAB tool, GUIDE. The simulated model GUI is considered as a very helpful and efficient tool for engine optimization, model evaluation, new model development, design of experiment and sensitivity analysis. Using simulated model GUI, the researcher and engine manufacturer can study the effect of changing the engine specific parameter, adjusting understudy engine shape, or can find quick engine response to desired change in engine variables.
