Being intelligent and gaining expertise in one's line of work may be beneficial in achieving immediate goals particularly when one might have to work single handedly. However, experience has proven that domain expertise is not the only ingredient that could ensure success in the long run when one has to work and interact in an open system. Therefore it may be sage to assume that people in business have to be judged not only on their technical know how but also on "how well they handle themselves and one another."
Companies waste vast sums each year on worker education and training programs. However what often makes those training programs ineffective is that they don’t pay necessary attention to vital interpersonal skills.
A lot many researchers have already delved into the various forms of intelligence. “Which form of intelligence takes precedence while making important decisions related to recruitment, selection, leadership development leading to creating an effective work culture”, is a question that needs to be considered.
This is why the importance of emotional intelligence cannot be neglected. Emotional competencies are at least as important as IQ if not more, particularly in determining the success of business people. Leadership is considered to be the driving factor behind performance in an organization and Emotional competencies are the most important at the highest levels of responsibility in a firm.
It is believed that emotional competencies can be learned by any worker at any career stage but what needs to be done is to devise a long term strategy that could institutionalize the best practices in a synergistic way in order to improve the bottom line effectiveness. |
