A Road Safety Audit (RSA) is a formal safety performance examination of an existing
or future road or intersection by an independent, multidisciplinary team, to identify any
potential unsafe feature or operational arrangement that may affect the safety of road
users. The identified potential road safety hazards are first quantified and then suitable
measures are taken accordingly to eliminate or otherwise treat to mitigate their adverse
effects by adapting economical way for ensuring the maximum safety of the road users.
In present research effort road safety audit of two selected segments of N-5 was
performed in order to identify road safety deficiencies and to suggest suitable road
safety counter measures. Detailed data on highway geometrics, posted speed limits,
highway drainage, number of crashes and different geometric control devices were
collected through field surveys and from police department. Our analysis revealed that
both the sites had satisfactory geometrics as per posted speed limits. However, operating
speed limits were found to be much higher and road segment geometry is not
satisfactory for safe vehicle operations under over-speeding scenario. Strict speed
enforcement, realignment to ensure speed consistency, proper marking and signage, and
placement of lateral and longitudinal rumble strips is recommended to enhance
