Swat motorway is very important in the overall development of whole KPK province. It will play a vital
role in development of swat and adjoining areas. More tourists will be attracted to natural beauty of
Swat, Kalam, Malam Jabba etc. by the construction of this expressway and will play a role in the
development of area.
Whole project is divided into several components i.e. design of foundations for bridges, roads
(Geotechnical Engineering), Structural designs of bridges (Structural Engineering), and design of
pavements (Transportation Engineering). There are different methods for construction of foundation
under bridges e.g. driven piles, drill shaft piles etc.
The scope of our project was to carry out analytical study of deep foundation elements. A company of
Austria named TRM introduced driven piles for the first time in Pakistan. Our research purpose was to
carry out feasibility study of these piles and a comparison between driven piles and drill shaft piles. We
drove two test piles, one at KSK Interchange and other one at Dubian Interchange Bridge. Different
tests were performed to analyze the strength of piles and a design was given for driven piles. Based
on no of piles used, installation time, resources required, test piles results, a comprehensive
comparison between drill shaft piles and driven piles were given.
Analysis has shown that Driven piles are better than drill shaft piles for projects in Pakistan. Therefore
these piles are recommended for use in foundation of bridges |
