Abstract:
Pakistan has experienced a rapid motorization in the past few decades and its significant effects
can be seen in major cities of the country. A major link road that connects Islamabad and
Rawalpindi is the IJP road. Majority volume is observed on this route. This increase in volume is
the direct result of urbanization in the city.
In this project our focus is on analyzing the effects of introduction of Feeder buses on IJP Route
and taking congestion mitigation measures by analysis and redesigning of intersections and
roads.
From analysis we found the current traffic patterns and characteristics on the IJP road. The
results after the introduction of Feeder Buses on this route have also been generated and an effort
was made to stabilize the traffic conditions by improving the Level of Service of the highway.
The traffic data on the 9.1 km patch under study was taken and then modal shift was applied to
it. The traffic conditions were then improved by introducing additional lanes, exclusive turnings
and grade separations. The main focus is on the delay times and the LOS of the patch.
The 2 intersections encountered were Mandi Mor Intersection and 9th Avenue Intersection. 10
metro bus stations are located throughout the highway with 10 pedestrian bridges for road
crossings. Bays were added on the highway and traffic was routed onto these bays accordingly.
Future traffic volumes were predicted in order to check the sustainability of traffic on facility.
Then to make the highway sustainable for the future traffic, different intervention on network
were taken into consideration while reaching to the final solution for future. From these
interventions we have tried to improve the delay times and the LOS on intersections, and
reducing stop delays and travel time of network
