dc.description.abstract With rapid urbanization, population growth, increase in average household income and soft leasing policies, the vehicle population has almost doubled in the last one decade. To keep up with these inflated demands, a continuous need for, development/ enhancement of new roadway infrastructure is needed on which heavy public exchanger is repeatedly spent. To maximize economy, it is critical to refurbish our conventional highway design methodologies and replace them with modern techniques such as the use of powerful design softwares. In present study, an effort has been made to design a segment of rural freeway using a powerful and modern geometric design software, Civil 3D. As Swat expressway was being constructed in the near vicinity of Military College of Engineering, Risalpur and sufficient data was readily available. It provided with a great opportunity for learning, which was effectively exploited. A 14 Km segment of Swat expressway was selected. Centreline and spot data was collected and the design was developed using Civil 3D. The design of the segment includes: - • Horizontal Design • Vertical Design • Cross-sectional Design • Placement of Hydraulic Structures • Identification and Placement of Safety Hardware Apart from this, a portion of the designed segment has also been simulated on 3D Max software replicating the developed design. This not only provides stakeholders realistic 3D representation of what the project will look like from various viewing angles, rather it is also equipped with information that allows the designer to detect and address design and safety issues prior to the road being built, hence significantly shortening the road design process, while assuring highest quality and compliant result en_US
