Abstract:
since realization of danger about spread of diseases due to non-technical handling of biomedical waste without any described management system, a lot of work has been done with regards to making of rules and regulations for dealing with waste at its original place, its collection, segregation, transportation to point of main dumping station. These rules and regulation have also been implemented with zeal and zest and proper measures have been taken with basic instruction and care. However, methodology adopted for disposal of biomedical waste has been worked out commercially for the societies where latest technology is much easily available but has become source of concern in societies of third world countries like Pakistan where awareness and source of technology is at its earliest stages.
Biomedical waste is form of solid waste and treated in three different ways (incineration, autoclaving and sterilization) before its final disposal. First two methods are normally used for huge volume of waste at commercial rate which requires huge cost for construction of respective plants and their running expenditures. As per statement of NIH Rawalpindi officials , more than 30 incineration and autoclave plants have been installed in different areas of Pakistan but are non-functional due to non availability of funds for repair and maintenance purpose. Sterilization method is commonly used for biomedical equipment before its utilization. There are three major types of sterilization i-e steam sterilization, microwave sterilization and chemical sterilization. Again a lot of funds are also required for development of plants for steam and microwave sterilization.
In conducting this research, low cost, availability in local market, reactivity and handling would be the criteria for selection of chemical to be used for chemical sterilization. Cost effect, volume control, compactness, weight and simple technical design will be the criteria of prototype design of equipment which will make approach much easier for verification of design in PRO E and ANSYS software.
