dc.description.abstract Throughout the years, the monitoring techniques have undergone an evolution regarding accuracy and data processing techniques; starting from classic topography to Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technologies up to the current survey systems like laser scanner and close range photogrammetry. For this thesis project, the main objective was to compare and evaluate two of the modern surveying methods for the computation of volumes. A brief comparison between Photogrammetry and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) based on efficiency and time consumption is carried out. This project uses an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) photogrammetric survey to cast out a map and elevation model of a target surface and the results are compared with the measurements made by a terrestrial laser scanner. AgiSoft Photoscan was used in processing the images and further estimating the volume of the target surface. The data from TLS was processed in FARO scene. A surface mining operation at Misalabad, Distt. Nowshera was used as a model site. The results obtained show that the volume calculated by terrestrial laser scanner is more accurate as compared to the other method en_US
