Abstract:
Ankle is one of the most important joints in a human body, which helps balancing the human
body during ambulation. Also ankles are the most common site of sprain injuries. There are
two methods to rehabilitate patient with such injuries. One is active assisted and the other is
passive assisted. This project is concerned with orthopaedic rehabilitation of a patient with
ankle injury using active assisted range of motion.
In active assisted range of motion, the doctor or therapist manually helps the patient in
moving a particular body part along a joint. The patient exerts a small amount of effort during
this movement. The project discusses design of an active assisted ankle recovery system. This
system will be able to perform dorsal and plantar inflexion, inversion, and eversion.
Our design is based on a rotating platform having one end fixed to another stationary
platform with two actuators. The other end of this top platform is connected to car window
power motors via two strings attached to its lower part. The motors are welded to the lower
platform. With the use of electronic components like Arduino, relay module and power
supply, the motors can be rotated and this enables the platform to rotate.
