Abstract:
We present a novel framework for the search and rescue of victims or assets
in the aftermath natural or man-made disasters. It employs unmanned aerial
vehicles (UAVs) for physical localization of wireless devices. Our framework
has low overhead and complexity in the wireless device. It uses range information only to localize all connected devices in a large area. It is suitable for
emerging 5G cellular devices. It can also be packaged into standalone devices
or wireless sensors. The framework can find applications for environmental
monitoring and data collection. Extensive simulations were conducted to
reveal the viability of this localization method with noisy information. The
framework is energy efficient and minimizes energy expended by the UAVs
during search
