Abstract:
Use of digital maps in cell phones has gained global popularity very rapidly and is
continuously on the rise. Map browsers on internet have already provided awareness to
common users and availability of similar maps on mobile telephones has become a
passionate public demand. This technology is being profitably used in the West, has been
introduced in the Far East, Middle East and was started in India 2008. Ufone and
Mobilink launched it in Pakistan in May 2009. Tangible guidelines are not available in
Pakistan for managing production of high quality digital maps thus this thesis work
has been undertaken to produce a comprehensive guideline tailored for our country so
that an error free, reliable and a profitable mobile based mapping product could be
launched.
Success of such applications depends on customer satisfaction, therefore, customer
requirement was established through a survey spread over a wide spectrum of mobile
users. MobiTrack and Utrack services introduced in Pakistan were scrutinized, also
leading services at international level were analyzed link, and having studied trends in the
mobile industry, the specifications for digital data have been established. Then the
detailed knowledge and techniques about project management have been applied to
formulate guidelines for managing a project for production of digital maps for the mobile
industry in Pakistan.
The customer is still inquisitive and waits for a quality product. These guidelines would
surely provide a clear direction for production of cost effective and accurate digital maps.
Once available these maps can be used for different GIS applications like vehicle
tracking, traffic control, town planning, law & order enforcement and even land
management. Moreover these would form part of our National Geographical Database.
