Abstract:
In order to make advances in the area of biomedical engineering and to improve its therapeutic
and diagnostic domain, novel materials are required that can imitate the complexity of biological
tissues. Because of the high water content and biocompatibility of hydrogels, they are being
considered for a wide range of medical applications. This dissertation investigates the synthesis
and bio-activity of alginate hydrogel and its crosslinked derivative in biomedical territory. A
series of alginate films and p-phthaloyl crosslinked alginate films were modified with
imidazolium-based bi-ionic liquid and green synthesized silver nanoparticles. Their synthesis
was confirmed by different techniques such as FTIR, XRD, 1
HNMR, and SEM. Moreover, their
mechanical and thermal properties were also studied with different parameters. These polymers
were subjected to test anti-bacterial activity against five different strains of bacteria including
both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. The results showed that the hydrogel films
incorporated with ionic liquid showed good activity and crosslinked films with the combination
of both ionic liquid and silver nanoparticles showed good results.
