Over the past few decades, most piezoelectric ceramic devices such as
filter, actuators, sensors and so on, have been designed from lead-based
piezoelectric ceramic materials, such as PZT, because of their excellent
piezoelectric properties. But due to environmentally harmful effect of Pb,
there is need to synthesize the lead-free ceramic having good properties as
compared to PZT. Therefore, lead free ceramic and composite play an
important role in environmentally friendly materials. In this study,
frequency dependent properties of Bi1/2 Na1/2 TiO3 – SrTiO3 composite were
studied. It is shown that the 24ST composite with (ST10) is a relaxor
ferroelectric as shown by the frequency dependent dielectric properties with an
piezoelectric featured with the presence of a reversible electric field induced phase
transformation at room temperature. It is also accompanied by a huge strain that
is ascribed to matrix and seed effect originating due to inhomogeneous
composition. The 24ST composite makes an attractive lead free candidate as
it presents a high normalized d33 * of 980 pm/V at a low electric field of 2.5
kV/mm for frequencies ranging from 0.1 up to 200 Hz. In the past,
innovations in actuators and ultrasonic transducers have been the driving
force for new developments in piezoelectric ceramics. Currently the main
objective is to reduce the triggering field and demolition with frequency for the
application of actuators.
