Abstract:
The increased participation of women in the academic workforce has raised significance
regarding work-life balance, particularly among mothers. This study aims to investigate the
lived experiences of maternal workers in higher education concerning career progression and
work-life balance. The qualitative approach is employed in this study to gather insight into
the lived experiences of working mothers in higher education, focusing on the obstacles and
challenges they encounter, the social support available and the strategies they adopt to
manage their dual roles simultaneously. Findings showed that excessive workload from
workplaces, societal norms and inadequate support systems contribute to work-life balance,
impacting mental and physical health. The study highlights the need for supportive
institutional policies and practices to enhance the well-being and career progression of
maternal academics.
