dc.description.abstract Dawn of the 21st Century has brought about a revolution in our lives. Rapidly changing technology and introduction of cutting edge tools has taken our lives into a complete new dimension. The epicenter of this all is undoubtedly the computer. From a high tech satellite circling around the earth to a smart phone in the hands of a youngster, all are wonders of computers. GIS & RS is also one of the fruits of computer technology that we enjoy today. Western world has been employing this trend changing technology for three decades now while in our country people are waking up to harness the enormous potential of this wonder of modern era. Utilization of GIS & RS to aid us in the field of civil engineering was the motive behind our effort to make some breakthrough in this field. Just by sitting back in your office and being able to investigate all necessary information required prior to construction works to begin, can surely be a big step towards change in the way we carry out civil engineering tasks. Our work in this field has been an effort to lay foundation for dedicated utilization of GIS & RS for hard core civil engineering purposes. This paper will provide a reader an understanding of the software's ArcGIS and ERDAS Imagine on how these can be utilized for the purpose of civil engineering. It will provide the reader a better understanding of all technological aspects related to field of GIS & RS, the way GIS & RS works in union and how their systems help us achieve what we intend to do en_US
