Abstract:
The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of Elvaloy polymer as modifier and Fly
Ash as mineral filler on mechanical properties of Stone Mastic Asphalt.
Elvaloy Modified Asphalt effects on properties of SMA were ascertained using Penetration
Grade 60-70 as reference material. It was observed that there is definite increase in Rut Potential,
Air Voids, Marshall Quotient and decrease in Flow. Stability is found to be nearly equal to that
of Penetration grade asphalt.
Utilization of fly ash, which is the by-product of coal-fired power generation, is of great
importance from an environmental and economical point of view. In this study stone dust was
chosen as a reference material. It was observed that there is significant increase in the Stability
and definite decrease in Flow for Fly Ash specimens. The changes in mechanical properties are
important in the sense that they affect the behavior of asphalt concrete pavement under applied
loads. Also Rut resistance characteristics of Fly Ash are found higher than stone dust.
Based on this study it is ascertained that Elvaloy polymer is suitable for Modification of
properties of SMA mixes and making it as a potent material for use in pavement construction
and Fly ash can be used effectively in SMA as filler replacement
