The economic growth and increasing urbanization is resulting in the urban sprawl,
encouraging private vehicle oriented developments. This rapid and ever growing
motorization is causing number of externalities such as air and noise pollution, traffic
congestion, casualties in the form of accidents, diminution of fuel energy and other
resources and an un-equitable transport system.
The current transport crisis can be only solved by creating a sustainable
transportation. A sustainable transport system is the one which provides safe, efficient,
environment friendly and socially equitable travel to all the citizens.
This project will help in setting a methodology for implementation of sustainable
transportation in Pakistan. For this purpose we have chosen Risalpur Cantt. as a model
city and carried out a community survey. Data acquired from the survey was then
analyzed and some recommendations were deduced in order to move transportation
towards sustainability. In the end we also have discussed Peshawar’s transport system
and have suggested that working on the same grounds we can achieve a sustainable
transport system in much larger cities such as Peshawar, Lahore, and Rawalpindi etc. as
well. |
