Seepage analysis is performed at design stage of a project to determine seepage
losses and hydraulic gradients at various points in the dam body. V notch flumes
are installed to monitor the actual discharge through the foundation and dam
body. The actual discharge is compared with the theoretical discharge. If the
actual discharge is less than the acceptable limits than the operator is satisfied. However, if the actual discharge exceeds the discharge by a substantial margin
than it is concluded that the embankment is not performing its designed function
and the entire design is critically reviewed and additional measures are taken to
ensure that detrimental hydraulic gradient are with in safe limits. In the study reported here is a comparison between design discharge and the
actual discharge measured. The design discharge was obtained from the
consultants reports and a detailed seepage analysis was performed by our
syndicate using computer software, SEEP/W. Actual discharge data was
obtained from WAPDA. The work done in this project will Insha Allah be a very effective and useful tool
for the students who want to gain knowledge regarding Seepage Analysis and
how it is carried out |
