dc.description.abstract The performance of HEV greatly depends upon its architecture and its components like battery, motor, bidirectional converters, and some others. Toyota Hybrid System (THS) is used in the current bestselling hybrid vehicle on the market—the Toyota Prius. This hybrid system contains a power-split planetary gear system which combines the benefits of series and parallel hybrid vehicles. The main purpose of this paper is to develop a dynamic model to investigate the unique design of THS, which will be used to analyze the control strategy, and explore the potential of further improvement. The selection criteria of the configuration for this project are briefly discussed and in addition to this, the parallel drivetrain with a planetary gear box is finalized for this project. A 3D Solidworks model is designed and developed through initial gearbox design calculations. Then the design is simulated through Ansys and analyzed thoroughly. Simulations confirm our model captures the fundamental behavior of THS reasonably well. en_US
