The rapid development of all parts of the world has been accompanied by the drastic demands of water for irrigation. Power generation, navigation, industrial processing and domestic uses. This demand is being met in many countries by creating reservoirs which impound the water, provide head and storage, and also protect the land from damage by floods. The dams which create these reservoirs are the major part of cost in time and money. Generally the dams are built of earth and rock to conserve the water fur the reasons that these native materials make it possible to build it rapidly and cheaply. The obvious reasons for the use of earth are its ready availability in most parts of the world. Moreover, it can be easily excavated, transported and compacted.
The performance of dam structures is required to he monitored on regular basis and needed to adopt all possible safety measures to save them from any adverse/ abnormal event.. These structures have rigid contact with earth or rock foundations, which usually ate somewhat erodable and often somewhat compressible. The placement of rigid, relatively impermeable |
