of drug for a longer duration In this study, synthesis and characterization of β-tricalcium phosphate–alginate and β-tricalcium phosphate–alginate–chitosan hydrogel beads have been carried out. The swelling behavior and in vitro release profile of ofloxacin from composite beads has been analyzed. The functional groups, stability of the polymer and surface properties of the hydrogel were characterized by FTIR, TGA, and SEM, respectively. Ionotropic gelation technique has been used to make hydrogel beads. β-Tricalcium phosphate is not coated rather mixed into the blend to decrease the release of mineral, so that the bone cement can contribute to controlled release of the drug and surrounding tissues can absorb it easily. It was observed that the polyelectrolyte complex formed between chitosan, β-tricalcium phosphate, and alginate controls the swelling ability and release profile of ofloxacin in phosphate buffer (pH 6.8). The release of ofloxacin from the β-TCP–Alg –Cht beads was comparatively slow and sustained. The results intimated that β-TCP–Cht–alg beads and β-TCP–alg beads can be a suitable carrier. |
