Abstract:
Population growth and rapid urbanization has raised many challenges regarding mobility in inter- and intra-major cities of Pakistan. Islamabad, being capital of the country, has faced congestion issues along with poor service and infrastructure facilities of public transport. In this study, we have proposed an efficient, safe, and reliable mode of transit to the commuters. The selection of two corridors have done on basis of previous preliminary studies carried out on major arterials that run through most densely populated areas of the twin cities (i.e., Rawalpindi, and Islamabad). The ridership data has collected through field survey and local authorities have provided data about service, scheduling, and infrastructure details. It assists in estimation of ridership at peak hours. Our analysis has supported a significant reduction in congestion from category “E” be mitigated to “A” level of service (LOS) in 5 minutes time headway. Therefore, it states that the proposed design would be beneficial in providing comfort, safety, and convenience in accordance with the international standards.
